Today marks the 20th anniversary of Linux, the brainchild of Linus Torvalds who announced the availability of a very basic Linux kernel on August 25, 1991.
The announcement was made on comp.os.minix – a Usenet newsgroup. Those were the days before the world wide web existed.
” I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu) for 386(486) AT clones. This has been brewing since april, and is starting to get ready. I’d like any feedback on things people like/dislike in minix, as my OS resembles it somewhat (same physical layout of the file-system (due to practical reasons) among other things). “
Strangely, former Apple CEO Steve Jobs resigned just two days ago, thus making this a monumental win for millions of Linux users around the world! 😀
He resigns because he wants to spend more time in his Apple orchard.
