Domaining in 2010 – a gift from the Greeks

The Battle of Marathon - the reason we exist today!

On September 12, 490 BC the battle of Marathon took place.

About 10,000 Athenians, along with 1,000 Plataeans confronted a Persian army of tenfold strength and fought the most decisive battle in ancient history.

Marathon is a plain in Attica, the peninsula that includes Athens and Piraeus – the main Athenian port since ancient times. The Persian empire under the rule of Darius the Great was undefeated and for years prior had occupied and enslaved the Greek colonies of Asia Minor (modern day Turkey).

Two thousand and five hundred years ago, the Greeks saved the western civilization – which back then was essentially entirely in the hands of Greece – in the decisive battle of Marathon. With 192 dead soldiers from the Athenians and 11 Plataeans killed in battle, the Greeks managed to capture and destroy several Persian ships, leaving behind some 6,000 dead Persians in the marshes of Marathon.

Praised by many modern historians as the single most important battle that secured the future of the western civilization, the battle of Marathon is the reason that 2,500 years later you can sit in front of a computer and monetize your domain names.

If the battle of Marathon had been lost, most of us today would be serving wine and fruit to the descendants of Persian kings. Not to mention that Shane Cultra would not be running marathons! 😀

Hey, thanks for the history lesson—now get back to the real world.

    Greece is facing bankruptcy…..

  2. Lucius "Guns" Fabrice says:

BullS – Greece spent all their money on shields, helmets, swords and arrows to fight the Persians. Do you know how much a good archer is paid these days?

  3. greek says:

When you guys discovered fire, Greeks already had Cholesterol 😛

If it hadn’t been for Greeks you would still be apes

So before you guys start making fun of Greece’s current financial situation you should better study some history first…

Go back to your caves now 😛

  4. yanni says:

    Beware of Greeks bearing gifts…

  5. Lucius "Guns" Fabrice says:

Greek – Welcome to the domain cave.

Cholesterol is bad for your health, eat more olive oil and less processed butter 😀 The warriors that beat the Persians ate very lean: fish, bread, soup, fruit – and the wine was diluted with water. Ώπα! 😀

Yanni – That’s what the Trojans said, but that was a different battle. And I don’t want to hear any “This is Sparta!” jokes 😀

  6. American Woman says:

Greeks make better lovers. Another wonderful gift from the Greeks. 😛 😀

  7. Lucius "Guns" Fabrice says:

American Woman – That’s a typo: geeks make better lovers. Unless you’re referring to marathon sex.

  8. American Woman says:

Oh, that was no typo. I once had a Greek lover and he had me shouting “OPA!” all night long.

All I’m saying is, Greeks are underestimated by us Americans. 😀

Shame on you, Americans! Go read a few history books.

BullS: you act like America is in better shape?? Well, at least my body is after the last Greek I had. OPA!

  9. Dean says:

If the Greeks had their way we would all be trading in Gyros instead of Euro’s or Dollars. The whole world would be an economic mess, not to mention everything would be covered in Tsatziki sauce.

  10. Lucius "Guns" Fabrice says:

American Woman – Sounds like a case of TMI to me 😀

Dean – Gyros doesn’t quite rhyme with Euros but I get the point. 😀 The fact is, that during the battle of Marathon there were no gyros wraps; but there was definitely sacrificial lamb offered to goddess Athena after the battle ended.

As for tzatziki, remember to use real Greek yogurt e.g. FAGE at all Publix stores.

    *burp*

  11. BullS says:

When I think of Trojans, I think of condoms

  12. Lucius "Guns" Fabrice says:

BullS – That’s because after the sack of Troy, Trojans used the trick of “wrapping up” their warriors – just like the Greeks did with the wooden horse 😀

“Dean – Gyros doesn’t quite rhyme with Euros but I get the point”
Your story, has nothing to do with Domaining, so we are about even 🙂

Lucius, I have had Greek yogurt, it’s more firm and creamier than the American version and in fact I prefer it. It’s a little harder to find and more expensive, but worth the extra expense.

  14. Lucius "Guns" Fabrice says:

Dean – It’s the 2500th anniversary of the battle of Marathon, hence the Marathon.gr link 😀
