Oh merde! The perils of Cloud Domaining in French

Mon dieu! Zese clouds are magnifique!

We’ve said it before: if you’re not familiar with the particulars of a language, do not attempt to register domains in it.

Such is the case with IDN domains, where a lot of rookie domainers simply registered compounds by simply flipping a dictionary.

In the latest and quite entertaining incident that unfolded on DNForum, the domain “Calcul De Nuage” dot com was presented as French for “CloudComputing” dot com.

Unfortunately, a native speaker of the French language – no, not Francois Carrillo – responded to the seller that the phrase is in fact inaccurate:

[…] “Calcul De Nuage” does not mean Cloud Computing in french.
1) In france we use the term “Cloud”, we never use “Nuage”, even if it is a good translation of this word.
2) Calcul de Nuage means something like Clouds Maths.
3) One better translation of Cloud Computing would be “Informatique en Nuage” or “Nuage Informatique”
4) “Nuage” word has form of bad reputation, because of negative vision of rain/thunder .. and maybe a little bit because of the messy vision we think of. […]

Definitely one for the books 😀 You can read the DNForum thread here.
