By crawling the Internet’s most remote areas, top WHOIS tool DomainTools has managed to reach into the vault of what appears to be a repository of ‘dark matter‘ domains.
Unlike regular domain names that maintain a pair of nameservers, dark matter domains only exist at the Registry with no hope of ever seeing the light of the world wide web.
An example is Spectrum.com
More than 400,000 dark matter .com domains are controlled by dark Lord Darth Verisign who operates the .com Registry.
In case you’re wondering, that’s why Darth Verisign increased prices again; to keep his army of minion dark matter domains in shape.
Challenging the official data, DomainTools operator, Duke Cloudwalker managed to discover that Lord Darth Verisign now holds 100,200,000 .com domains, thanks to the dark repository under control.
DomainTools made the announcement that a mission is underway to infiltrate Darth Verisign’s Death Star HQ and extract all the data for the 400,000 domains kept hostage there.
To be continued in Episode 2: War of the gTLDs.
