Arma 3: Video game developers caught spying in Greece

Raytraced images from Lemnos are used in Arma 3.

These days, the amount of realism infused into video games can make or break a game’s success.

Two employees of Bohemia Interactive, a Czech video game producer, were arrested on the Greek island of Lemnos, photographing and video recording military bases.

Lemnos is strategically placed in the north part of the Aegean, halfway through to the Turkish waters. It offers an open sea surveillance of the Greek airspace as well.

According to the Greek news channel, News247.gr, the two Czechs, aged 28 and 33 years old were arrested in Lemnos at noon yesterday by the local police.

Arma 3 is a military scenario taking place in Greece.

They were charged with spying; the two Czechs stated that they were in the process of enriching the graphics of the video game “Arma 3” – a military scenario taking part on the Greek island of Lemnos and the nearby island of Agios Efstratios.

Bohemia Interactive was laconic in their response about the incident of the arrest, via its CEO, Marek Spanel:

“This is true. We prefer this topic not to be discussed on our forums atm, at least until we know more specific details about the case so I am going to close this topic and our moderators are going to close any related dicussion here, thank you for understanding.”

The statement appears to indicate that the two Bohemia Interactive employees had no authorization by the Greek authorities to survey or photograph the military facilities, something that would not be granted anyway.
