AOL shutting down 15-year old Winamp media player and web site!

America Online – a company that through the years, littered millions of mailboxes with its sign-up floppies and CD’s, can’t be relied upon.

After 15 years of existence, AOL is shutting down Winamp.com and the associated media player, Winamp.

According to the official announcement:

“Winamp.com and associated web services will no longer be available past December 20, 2013. Additionally, Winamp Media players will no longer be available for download. Please download the latest version before that date. See release notes for latest improvements to this last release.”

AOL bought Nullsoft, creators of Winamp, in 1999 for $400 million dollars in stock, during the explosion of the mp3 era.

Winamp prided itself for being a non-bloated, lightweight media player, with its infamous “It really whips the llama’s ass!” demo mp3 file playing after the software’s installation.

Rest in peace, Winamp. 🙁

My favourite music player, it’s a shame to see it go.

I’ve been using this program forever, used it to tune into #prankradio on efnet in the 90’s, good ole days, ran hip hop off my shoutcast server for 30-50 ppl…still prefer winamp today over spotify, last.fm, etc…can’t believe this, RIP winamp

AOL is insane. Killing brand, which alone without investment in further development can bring some profit.

I’m still using best of breed – WinAmp 2.91 with default simple black/green template.
