Domain inequality: Less than 1% of the world owns a domain name

Numbers don’t lie, and a new domain infographic created by the Domain Index, organizers of the first Virtual Web Fair, shows some interesting results.

Domain-Inequality

In the top ownership by domain value section, the top 1% of domains ranked by portfolio value – is owned by 580,000 persons or companies. That number consists of 29 million domains with a $26.9 Billion dollar valuation.

When it comes down to number of domains, the top 10 domain portfolio holders are controlling 8.3 million domains with a value of $1.4 Billion dollars.

The research shows that excluding all free domains, subdomains etc., the global domain ownership is 52 million unique companies or individuals at the most; that’s less than 1% of the world’s population.

Clearly, there’s a lot of progress to be made in order to expose more of the world to domain ownership!
