Edit: The original article, as presented below, contains certain inaccuracies that were unintentional. DomainGang regrets the errors and provides the following corrections and amendments:
- NamePros was never hosted on phpBB forum software.
- Founder Ron James was not involved in any arguments with DNForum moderators at the time NamePros was launched.
- The most recent sale of NamePros occurred at the end of summer in 2013, not in late 2014 as the article assumed, based on an unverified source.
As members of the NamePros community we offer a profound apology for these unintentional inaccuracies.
Original article follows:
—
NamePros was formed by domain investor Ron James in 2003, after arguments with DNForum moderators erupted at the time; the forum initially operated on phpBB software but soon moved over to vBulletin and currently on xenForo.
From the beginning, NamePros attracted the younger crowds, along with seasoned domainers who continued their participation on DNForum but found NamePros to be far less regulated.
Ron James sold NamePros in early 2012, and the story was broken by DomainGang; domain parking company, Bodis, bought the NamePros domain, forum and assets.
A few months ago, NamePros changed ownership and is currently managed by a group of Directors and its large user base boasts more than 850,000 members. Many members retain their DNForum accounts as well, but engage on NamePros more often.
Effective moderating is performed by domain investors who have been around for a while.
NamePros maintains a liberal position on new gTLDs, ccTLDs and traditional TLDs as well. Active forums cover dot .TV and gTLD sales, and members are eager to report on activity and sales for such TLDs.
NamePros is the domain flipper’s paradise, as a large number of domains available for sale are hand-registrations that are being offered for a nominal fee. Domain flipping is an easy way for many early investors to generate capital, and move onto bigger domain investments. One can find some diamonds in the rough, that can be obtained for under $100 dollars.
A lot of activity occurs in the expired domains and drop catching forums, Domain Appraisals and gTLD discussion forums. There is plenty of activity on the Domains For Sale, and Designs Contents attract both wannabe and established designers for small projects for the NamePros community.
When engaging in discussions at NamePros, be prepared for plenty of opinionated responses; even NamePros forum leaders are often criticized when their views differ substantially from that of the “crowd.”
That being said, NamePros is a must visit, particularly with its free access; there are options to upgrade one’s membership to a Business account as well.
