Was LA.com sold for too little?

The news surrounding the sale of the ultra-premium, two letter .com domain, LA.com, is rather shocking.

George Kirikos researched the acquisition’s background, and deep into the details located the domain’s selling price: $1.2 million dollars.

Two letter .com domains are the creme de la creme of digital assets, and they can range in price from hundreds of thousands, to millions of dollars.

Many are acquired by Chinese corporations, and George Kirikos often reports on such acquisitions.

According to public data, here are some recent, large LL .com sales:

  • fb.com     $8,500,000     September 2010
  • ig.com     $4,700,000     September 2013
  • yp.com     $3,850,000     November 2008
  • mi.com     $3,600,000     April 2014
  • if.com     $1,000,000     February 2003
  • vu.com     $700,000     November 2011

LA.com is unique among these short domains, being a popular shorthand of a large metropolis, Los Angeles.

With all this in mind, it’s time to take the people’s pulse, regarding the value of LA.com.

  1. Scott Neuman says:

    Certainly too cheap.

  2. Eric Lyon says:

Definitely a great deal for the buyer. The seller must of gone into debt or about to lose some physical assets and needing instant capital to sell for that amount, imo. You just never know though. I think it was worth way more than what was reported.

  3. Mike says:

    Commission was ….. % ?

  4. Dashawn says:

LA.com was undersold imo in comparison to other LL .com sales. Either way it goes, I would have loved to be on the receiving end of that transaction (as the seller).

  5. Adam says:

Should have sold for more money.
