The gTLD initiative and market is about to be given an instant boost, after ICANN‘s announcement of some imminent changes to the regulations.
Announcing the news from Guadelupe, Mexico, ICANN social strategy director, Frank Farezze appeared visibly excited.
“It is very important to let the Registrars familiarize themselves with the vastly increased workload that they will incur, once the first gTLDs get approved for the general public”, said Farezze.
“We have decided that the best method would be to enable the gTLD layer for the Registrars, so that each one receives their brand name as a gTLD to experiment with”.
This means that very soon we will be seeing .Fabulous, .Name, .Register and .NetSol go live, along with .eNom, .GoDaddy and .Moniker
While Mr. Farezze called the upcoming introduction of dozens of gTLDs a “vastly increased workload“, it is very clear that a better definition of it would have been “total chaos” or “shock and awe“.
The upcoming introduction of gTLDs has been received with a lot of skepticism by holders of large intellectual property portfolios, that will now have to pro-actively apply for their marks as TLDs.
No date was set for the launch of the Registrar gTLD program, however it’s speculated that it will occur during the next 3-day ICANN gathering at some exotic, relaxing and utterly expensive tropical resort.
Shoot! I should have picked Sex, Inc as my company name. I wonder if there’s still time for a name change?

Tom – There’s usually time for everything, including a sex change – I mean, corporate name change š
