In November, the Gambling.com Group announced the acquisition of the domain Casinos.com, for an undisclosed price:
“We recently completed the acquisition of a superstar marquee domain, which in our view, is the single most desirable and valuable domain for companies in our line of business: Casinos.com.
Casinos.com is just casinos and casino, as I’m sure everyone on the call knows, is the most lucrative gaming product,” said Gambling.com Group CEO Charles Gillespie.
In August 2020, the company had filed for the registration of the mark GAMBLING.COM at the USPTO. On June 15, 2021, the mark was registered.
The company is now moving on with an application to register the mark CASINOS.COM with the USPTO, with an intent to use clause and for the following services:
Advertising and directory services, namely, promoting the services of others by providing a web page featuring links to the websites of others.
Applying for the registration of matching marks is an ongoing trend among owners of generic domain names, following the decision by SCOTUS on the Booking.com trademark application.
Since then, dozens of generic domain names have been applied to be registered as trademarks, inclusive of the TLD.
As of January 5th, 2021, BOOKING.COM is a registered trademark with the USPTO.
Will these applications become the new norm? Watch this video from NamesCon Online 2020.
