Stolen #domains: USB.com, Photographs.com snatched from Network Solutions

A group of ultra premium domain names has been reported as stolen and moved away from Network Solutions.

The cache of stolen domains include the following:

  • USB.com
  • Photographs.com
  • Australia.net
  • 2227.com

Three of these domains were moved from NetSol to Shinjiru MSC Sdn Bhd, an ICANN-accredited registrar based in Malaysia.

The practice is familiar: a registrant’s account holding valuable domains is compromised at NetSol and domains are being transferred away. The thief doesn’t edit WHOIS information other than the contact email, attempting to not alert the domains’ registrant. Once they are moved away, the domains are peddled to unsuspected buyers, listed at domain marketplaces, or through brokers.

The current WHOIS of the first 3 is masked with a GDPR notice, indicating its registrant resides in Norway.

The thief attempted to gauge the market value of these domains, inquiring about appraisals in a NamePros thread. The same person listed for sale USB.com and Photographs.com. These sales listings are being investigated.

The domain USB.com is of particular interest, as it belongs to the portfolio of Vantiv, a company renamed to WorldPay in 2011.

In March 2019, Fidelity National Information Services, Inc. (FIS), announced a $43 billion deal to buy Worldpay, reported as the biggest deal ever in the international payments sector. The acquisition closed in June 2019 and Worldpay was merged into FIS. Source: Wikipedia.
