Registrants of generic domain names are applying for the registration of trademarks at the USPTO.
These applications include the TLD, following the decision by SCOTUS on Booking.com earlier this summer.
A recent application for CYPHER.COM caught our attention, as the domain Cypher.com is parked with a lander bearing its owner’s name. The application, however, is in the name of Cypher Medical LLC, a Texas corporation:
Medical device in the nature of a container for collection and measuring biological fluids.
The trademark application was filed with an “intent to use” clause, indicating that there is no current use of the mark. That, in turn, might indicate that a sale for the domain name Cypher.com has occurred.
Cypher Medical operates from the domain name Cypher-LLC.com currently.
