The domain name TASS.com was registered in 1993, making it one of the earliest registrations; at 22 years old, who would have imagined that it’d be lost in a UDRP.
And yet, that’s exactly what happened.
Itar-Tass News Agency of Moscow, Russian Federation, managed to snag the domain; a defense of laches might have prevailed in this case. Alas, there was no response from the domain owner in this UDRP.
The Complainant currently operates from TASS.ru.
A three member panel even hinted that the error page displayed at TASS.com and the WHOIS privacy utilized worked against the Respondent:
“The Respondent is not actively using the disputed domain name and has not made any submissions or provided any evidence to show any contemplated good faith use. In addition, by hiding behind a privacy service, the Respondent took active steps to conceal his identity.”
This is a classic case where the domain could be defended at the Federal Court; the domain’s current owner might need to act fast.
