A Kickstarter project funded with more than $200,000 has evolved into a potential threat for the entire PPC and advertising industry.
AdTrap, a small company in Palo Alto, California, is currently selling the device for $139. The gadget plugs between your cable modem and your router or computer network.
Running customized linux software, AdTrap is trained to block ads as they are reaching your modem, blocking such content before it’s displayed on your computer; even ads appearing before YouTube video.
The device could deliver a significant blow to PPC providers of parked domains, banner-based advertising and online advertising networks. It could ruin the livelihood of small businesses and larger companies alike, which depend on advertisers to sponsor their operating costs and free content.
Depending on whether the device becomes adopted by the broader consumer base, this might mean lawsuits are coming.
