The Tech In Asia technology publication reveals that Tencent, the Chinese giant behind the QQ social network, partnered with CNNIC – the .CN Registry.
The reason, was revealed yesterday, when tens of thousands of numeric .CN domains in the six digit range were registered – those that were still available, that is.
Since QQ numbers are currently in the 9-digit range, such as 123456789, Tencent is expected to do the unthinkable and secure several hundred million .CN registrations, one for each QQ user.
“[…] users will have to opt-in to the domain service, and they won’t be able to get any domain they want. Instead, everyone’s “personalized” domain will be their QQ number. So, for example, if your QQ number is 137483503 (a number I just made up), then your personalized domain would be 137483503.cn and you’d be able to receive mail at your_name_here@137483503.cn.”
This means, that the number of .CN domains will easily surpass the total number of .Com registrations very soon.
