Giant online auction house eBay has been hacked, and is in the process of asking its millions of users to change their passwords.
As posted on the corporate blog, a cyberattack on eBay servers compromised a database containing encrypted passwords and other non-financial data.
While there have been no reports of unauthorized access to user accounts, or to credit card information, eBay recommends that its users change their passwords regardless.
“Cyberattackers compromised a small number of employee log-in credentials, allowing unauthorized access to eBay’s corporate network, the company said. Working with law enforcement and leading security experts, the company is aggressively investigating the matter and applying the best forensics tools and practices to protect customers.
The database, which was compromised between late February and early March, included eBay customers’ name, encrypted password, email address, physical address, phone number and date of birth. However, the database did not contain financial information or other confidential personal information. The company said that the compromised employee log-in credentials were first detected about two weeks ago. Extensive forensics subsequently identified the compromised eBay database, resulting in the company’s announcement today.”
It is surprising that despite the incident occurring more than three months ago, they just now plan to alert the eBay users to change their account info.

SOB! It’s getting really annoying changing my different passwords on the 67 sites I visit that require passwords every other week!!! Not much time for anything else!
It is so frustrating when every service seemingly is getting compromised. It is time to roll out some harsh penalties against hackers, companies who don’t do enough about hackers and just disconnect certain countries from the internet including nigeria & romania. Also, has anybody seen toby clements around? He seems to have dissapeared from the scene and now his site toby.com goes to a PPC page since the news came out that he is having financial issues…
Been in the internet space for quite a bit of time and their description of what has happened just doesn’t make sense. Maybe it’s just their bad choice of wording to make it comprehensible by the general public.
A cyber attack and accessing a database filled with passwords have little to do with each other. On the other hand, if eBay leaves part of their network exposed and poorly secured then that is the fault of no one else but eBay. They are making it seem like some sort of “cyber attack” drilled a hole into their network and accessed their database. Just science fiction. If they take better care of their network security then these issues wouldn’t happen.
