Facebook announced Libra, along with Calibra, as a brand pair leveraging a new cryptocurrency protocol and wallet.
The announcement sent a lot of domain speculators into high gear, seeking to profit from these popular keywords.
Registering a generic term is one thing, but “Facebook” is a famous brand and trademark. By incorporating trademarks alongside generic keywords, one is engaging in cybersquatting.
One such obvious case can be seen below; the domainer is selling FacebooksLibra.com and FacebooksCrypto.com – two domains that can get him in hot water. Such domain registrations lead to UDRP filings, and more litigious acts.
Attempting to profit from a famous mark is a blatant act of cybersquatting, which gives domain investors a bad reputation.
