Just three days ago, ICANN announced the “beginning of the end”, as it applies to the US government overseeing core Internet functions. ICANN also released an FAQ document related to the transition.
In a video released the same day, ICANN CEO, Fadi Chehadé, states:
“This is a moment of triumph. This is a moment, where the multi-stake model shows that it is mature, and ready, and we no longer need the stewardship of one government; we now need the world’s stewardship, to come and ensure that our functions are performed as requested by the global community.”
The ICANN video has received plenty of downvotes and a mixed reaction in comments, some of which are quite derogatory.
One thing is certain: the change isn’t going to pass without a strong reaction from the US-based public, whose resources and tax money have been greatly involved in the growth of the Internet, its infrastructure and established processes; in the minds of many, the planned surrender of the IANA functions to a global consortium should be personally examined by the US President.
