As of today, ICANN is officially the moderator of gTLD applications, with hundreds of potential new top level domains being applied for.
“We will prevail”, said Rod Beckstrom, who is exiting ICANN voluntarily in July.
“Nothing and no-one will stop us, not even some overly-confident Canadian critic whose name ends in -rikos”, added Beckstrom, smirking.
An onslaught of new gTLD applications are already filling up the inbox of ICANN, that will be summoned to approve or disprove of them.
Since the rules aren’t written in stone, many of these applications might end up becoming lawsuit monsters for the IP attorneys to flourish on.
Already on the stash of gTLD applications are the following:
- .supergay – From the San Fransisco Super Gay community
- .pwn3d – Applied to by the Counter-Strike Gamers Association
- .feedme – A non-profit initiative of food manufacturers to feed the malnourished of Africa and receive huge tax breaks
- .botox – Applied to by the pharmaceutical company that manufactures Botox
- .cheapdestinations – A tourist office that failed to register CheapDestinations.com
- .plumbers – Applied to by the American Association of Plumber professionals
- .domainers – A French application by someone who signed as “Francois C.“
All these pending applications will have to either be declined or approved for the sum of $185,000 plus applicable taxes, unless hell freezes over and ICANN reverses their politics by hiring intelligent technocrats on their board.
