China’s Alibaba, set a new global sales record on “Singles Day,” contributing to an eye-popping $25.4 billion dollars in sales in 24 hours.
That’s a 40% increase over last year’s record.
What is Singles Day?
What started out as an informal holiday in China, to celebrate single people on a day that utilizes “1”: November 11th, or 11/11.
We know how the Chinese go nuts over numerical symbolism. Alibaba turned Singles Day into a festival of discount deals in 2009.
Jack Ma, founder and CEO of Alibaba, at this year’s Bloomberg Global Business Forum said that the future of jobs will no longer be in manufacturing, as in the past 200 years, but rather, in services.
The CEO of Alibaba stated:
“It’s no longer made in China, made in America – it’s made in Internet.”
The domain owner of MadeInInternet.com is finally vindicated; the domain was registered in 1999, right before the dot .com bubble of 2000.
Coincidence? ๐
