The Lincoln Project is a sociopolitical movement by Republicans, united against Donald Trump’s attempt to secure a second presidential term.
Operating from the domain name LincolnProject.US, it’s “an effort to highlight our country’s story and values, and its people’s sacrifices and obligations. This effort transcends partisanship and is dedicated to nothing less than preservation of the principles that so many have fought for, on battlefields far from home and within their own communities.”
President Donald Trump called the foundation’s operators “losers,” and there is no doubt the political agenda in November’s elections will be fiery hot.
The use of a dot .US domain name might surprise some, but it does not confuse Google rankings. Searching for the “brand” in Google, returns the web site’s indexed pages at the top slots of the results. Google does not rank .com higher than other TLDs, as its ranking algorithm is TLD-agnostic.
The Lincoln Project is sitting comfortably on a domain with the official ccTLD of the United States of America, which incidentally, is the first ccTLD ever to be allocated.

Dot us would do better if it was .usa instead
Well formulated article. Thanks!
George – Impossible. The cctld iso-3166 allocates 2-letter combinations only.
This is not completely accurate:
“Google does not rank .com higher than other TLDs, as its ranking algorithm is TLD-agnostic.”
Google does boost local searches for their respective ccTLDs. Meaning a .US would get a boost over a .com in US based searches. When talking about gTLDs it is however correct, one gTLD is not preferred over another.
Lars – To rank in localized searches, your content needs to be relevant. E.g. an Indian domain (.in) won’t rank higher for searches in India, if the .org (or .com) provides more relevant content. In this case, the .US has no competition for the content it provides. It will rank equally high from another locale.
