The athletics department of the University of Iowa is working with the ICM Registry, sponsors of the .XXX TLD, to secure and acquire several variations of its name.
However, aside from the athletics department, the University of Iowa chose not to purchase any new domains because there’s a real proliferation of TLDs, which would become expensive if they tried to register them all.
In other words, the athletics department is covering the potential danger of someone maliciously registering its name and – for example – setting up a web site with indecent photos of cheerleaders or other provocative images of students from UI.
Maybe Penn State should do the same!
