On the Internet, acronyms serve a healthy purpose: to deliver a short, memorable version of the expanded set of words they represent.
It’s not a secret that Domain Name Wire, the online publication dedicated to covering domain news for more than a decade, also operates from DNW.com, a premium and valuable three letter .com domain.
The latter is also used by DNW founder, Andrew Allemann, as a URL shortener for articles of his publication.
That’s brilliant.
Late last year, Allemann applied for two trademarks, through his entity Brainstorm Labs LLC: Domain Name Wire and DNW.
The latter was approved and received notice of publication today for the following classes:
IC 041. US 100 101 107. G & S: Entertainment services, namely, providing video podcasts in the field of the domain name industry; on-line journals, namely, blogs featuring news and information regarding the domain name industry. FIRST USE: 20090227. FIRST USE IN COMMERCE: 20090227
Unfortunately, and rather shockingly, the application for Domain Name Wire has been denied so far. The reason given: the mark was deemed merely descriptive.
While some might see this as an issue, we believe that it’s a blessing in disguise, as Domain Name Wire can now focus fully on DNW as the primary brand, which is shorter to type and easy to memorize.
DNW is exactly how my partner and I refer to Domain Name Wire when discussing articles and such that we have read on the site. We both agree the abbreviated trademark was a success.
