Verisign – the managers of .com and .net domains – has put a lot of effort in rebuilding its network infrastructure.
Still, today’s demand for domain registrations has exceeded all expectations.
With more than 100 million .com domains under its control, Verisign is testing a new method to alleviate the stress imposed on its network.
“We are considering disabling domain registrations on the weekends altogether,” said Marcus Aurelius of Verisign.
“The majority of those domains registered during the weekend are mostly the byproduct of people getting drunk or high and registering some really crap domain names”, added Aurelius.
By disabling domain registrations on weekends, Verisign estimates that it will recover about 22.5% of its weekly traffic – a savings of several million dollars in today’s bad economy.
“When the same people turn sober on Monday, they realize that their precious domain choices weren’t that hot after all,” said Marcus Aurelius. “At Verisign, we will actually make more money from lowering our network use, than by getting crappy domains added to our database of domains under management!” exclaimed Aurelius.
The testing of this new method by Verisign, is expected to produce some interesting results, crucial for the rolling out of new gTLDs by ICANN.
