Wal-Mart to launch Domain Registrar and Roll back Prices

In an effort to step into the multi-million dollar domain market, retail giant Wal-Mart announced it is launching its own domain registrar.

The project was unveiled today at the national conference of Wal-Mart executives, in Dallas, Texas.

With “Rolling back domain prices” as its motto, the new domain registrar will attempt to lure in thousands of customers by offering prices below cost.

“Most of our products are manufactured in China for a few cents; our customers appreciate the fact that we don’t rip them off. They know that by buying at Wal-Mart they are getting value for their money”, said Billy Bob Recton, regional manager for Wal-Mart.

“With domain names, we will be giving our customers free grocery coupons to be used at Wal-Mart. The idea is to have one million domains by the end of the year”, he added.

According to the internal documents released at the conference, the Wal-Mart Domain Registrar will offer .com, .net and .org domains for only $5 in batches of 10. That’s huge savings for the budget-conscious domainers that are used to paying almost twice as much.

“Will I drop GoDaddy for Wal-Mart once they start selling domains? Absolutely!”, said Ricky Stug from Knoxville, Tennessee. “I buy everything at Wal-Mart, best place to be, so why not my domains as well?”, he added, parting his long hair to the side.

We will have to wait and see how other domain registrars will respond to this competitive move by Wal-Mart to take over the domain registrar industry.
