A domain investor from New Mexico was hit with a massive bill on Saturday; his Registrar is asking him to pay for 8 years’ worth of domain renewals.
Freddy Krooger – pronounced, Crew-ZER – received the bill from Outstandingly Massive Domains and is refusing to pay it.
Krooger stopped paying his domain renewals in May 2007, after battling depression, a double divorce, and losing his home to foreclosure. For a while, he worked as a boiler repair technician.
Somehow, his domain Registrar never caught wind of his failure to submit payments. They renewed 1249 domains for 8 years, paying the ICANN fees.
“The domains were being renewed automatically by our Registrar, and Mr. Krooger owes us back fees, it is embarrassing to admit,” said John Smith of Outstandingly Massive Domains, a domain reseller with eNom.
“We are talking about several thousand dollars in back fees, and to be honest, those are some pretty crappy domains he will be paying for!” exclaimed Smith.
Freddy Krooger’s domain list might eventually make it on several domain auction marketplaces, such as NameJet, Flippa and GoDaddy Auctions.
He plans to take the Registrar to court.
“It’s there [sic] fault they sent me a bill now instead of 8 years ago, how am I supposed to know they kept renewing the domains on my behalf?” said Freddy Krooger, visibly dejected, adding: “These crooks won’t get a penny from me, I will become their biggest nightmare!”
Keep in mind that whoever acquires these domains will have to pay the renewal fees.
