Registerfly.com – the former ICANN accredited registrar who dissolved as part of a financial scandal in 2007 – is alive!
The domain expired, was deleted and was re-registered seconds later by an automated service.
While some expected NameJet to be the auction platform, others put their money on SnapNames and Pool.
Neither of those domain venues, however, caught the ‘fly! 😀
BackorderZone – a little known drop-catching service – caught the domain, apparently when other services were having a happy Friday moment.
Based on the process that Backorderzone uses, the domain RegisterFly.com is being auctioned among those that backordered it.
The auction currently includes 34 bidders, a highest bid of $1,450 and less than 16 hours until the end of the auction, which will allocate RegisterFly.com to the highest bidder.
While some might say that they are investing in a piece of (bad) domain history, the mere fact that the domain does not retain its original 2000 registration date makes it useless, in our opinion.
Whoever wins RegisterFly.com also inherits all the bad reputation and complaints by thousands of users that used the now defunct registrar in the 2000’s.
Update: The domain was sold for $1,950 after 34 bidders fought for it.
RIP registerfly
Rot In Peace 😀
