Singapore domainer gets jail for .XXX domain registration

Singapore police are monitoring the Internet.

Ethics in far away tech haven Singapore are strict. So strict , that Jiaming Sim found out it’s not easy to defend his own trademark.

Eager to protect his registered trademark against domain squatters, Jiaming Sim applied for the domain during the .xxx sunrise period.

The result was devastating.

A sizable police force entered his apartment, just four hours later, confiscated his computer equipment and put him under arrest.

He broke a couple of teeth and four ribs in the process.

His lawyer, Pnob Chang explained:

“Jiaming tried to protect his company’s interest. Unfortunately, Internet Crime Police in Singapore are very strict and monitor traffic to adult web sites. Jiaming only wanted to register his domain in .xxx so that no competitor would post lewd content on it.”

Jiaming Sim produces papaya and tomato pulp that is famous all over Singapore. He regularly monitors all new TLDs and ccTLDs for trademark infringement and utilizes the sunrise process.

“Sometimes the fees are hefty but what can you do”, says his lawyer. “We will file a motion to release Jiaming in the coming weeks, in the meantime he is kept at a maximum security prison in Bukit Panjan. The jail offers no Internet access.”

While there seems to be a worldwide interest in the new .xxx TLD that caters to adult and pornographic web sites, entire countries such as China and India block it or restrict access to the .xxx TLD.

The problem is that I cannot verify this story on any third party websites or even Singapore online news platforms; in Wikipedia, they say it’s not “notable”
