Nominet – the handlers of the .uk top level domain which includes the popular .co.uk TLD– has approached the local government of Wales, seeking permission for a Welsh TLD application.
Should the motion be approved, Nominet will be financing the ICANN application – currently priced at $185,000 – in order to secure the Welsh TLD.
It is not clear if it will be an extended code such as .welsh or .wales or a shorter version consisting of three letters.
Which brings us to the next question: would the .co.uk split, thus leading to .england, .scotland, .wales and .ireland or would the Old Albion geo TLD remain intact?
There’s too much money invested in the .co.uk ccTLD. A split would never work.
Let’s hope the application is for .cymru so we can all forget it.
Well-said, Dale. The local name for Wales is Cymru.
Wasn’t the .co.uk a TLD?
