Flippa.com – The domain and web site aftermarket from Down Under
What appears at first to be a new type of scam on Flippa – the Australian marketplace for selling domain names and web sites – is nothing more than an old advertising trick, used on eBay and other auction web sites.
The seller of the domain name, Phentermine.net, listed it on Flippa with a BIN price of $500,000. Miraculously, someone actually bid $100,000 on this listing, that bears no proof of traffic or revenue. Flippa bids are private and not capped via verification until payment is due.
Phentermine – an expired trademark for medicine related to appetite suppressants – is still a lucrative business for several pill sellers in and out of the US. The seller of Phentermine.net claimed sales of $30,000 each month, but how much of this is accurate?
The domain is placed high in Google searches, and it contains several pages of information on the phentermine substance, with one “Buy Phentermine” call to action banner that links to Phentromine.net (note the spelling). The latter is a web site in St. Petersburg, Russia, that sells those pills.
It seems that the only reason this listing of Phentermine.net went up in Flippa, is to increase inbound traffic and search engine backlinks. The same method has been utilized on eBay in the past, with listings of obscure or generic domains asking for millions of dollars, with no actual intention of selling.
