Domain data: Updated gTLD totals for February 26, 2014

Today’s list of gTLD registration data includes both .Sexy and .Tattoo which launched yesterday by Uniregistry.

Finally, we will be able to see a full day’s worth of results for the debut of Frank’s gTLDs, unlike the less than 1/2 a day numbers published yesterday.

Nothing has changed at the top, with dot .Guru and dot .Photography being the most popular gTLDs, and dot .Today coming in a strong third.

Without further ado, here are the official numbers for the current active domains across several gTLDs. For previous results click here.

Some very weak numbers down the bottom, and they’ll probably decline in a year as speculators realise their mistake and drop the junk. Some of those registries are definitely going to make a year-on-year loss, so I wonder how long they can sustain it. The multitude of weaker gTLDs still to come are going to be up against some tough competition plus the new gTLD novelty will wear off over time, so expect some very low figures in the future. It’s very telling that the total registrations haven’t even cracked the peak of .tel (300,000). This is what happens to an industry when greed gets in the way of common sense.

Reality – There will be hundreds if not thousands of gTLDs coming out this year and beyond. There hasn’t been a full month of availability yet.

Regarding your ominous predictions, are you saying you are smarter than all the people running and staffing those registries, combined, let alone those investing in them?

If so, then you are hired, bro! 😀

PS Dot .tel was doomed from the get-go, no ability to build anything on it.

“Reality” – surely you are correct. The internet is, 20 years after Netscape, never ever going to be anything but increasingly lengthy and meaningless multi-hyphenated dot-coms.

Relevant and descriptive domain names like the gtlds are surely the foolish artifice of the same people who have persecuted you all your life.

Thankfully, you can bask in your wisdom by sitting it all out.

Indeed, you are philosophically obligated to do so.

    Congratulations.

DomainGang, conversely, are you saying these people staffing the new gTLD registries in the speculative hope that .horse will pay its way are smarter than me? 🙂

The hundreds if not thousands of gTLDs that are coming are going to make things harder for the registries, not easier. Basic supply and demand. If you have 100 carrots and there’s only a market for 10 carrots then you’re going to have a bad time, especially when you paid a premium up-front to buy the carrots in the first place. I’ll make a prediction that in 36 months you’ll see roughly 30% to 50% bankruptcy in the registries.

Reality – Unless you are somehow involved with the businesses that the domain industry consists of, I think you’d benefit from staying in the sidelines to write your memoirs and predictions. Those that aren’t sitting in the bleachers have a big game to enjoy. Domaining isn’t for everyone, certainly not for the negative thinkers.
