Domain security requires the use of two-factor authentication for accounts.
Name.com announced that it’s switching its two-factor authentication system, from that of Verisign VIP Access, to the Google Authenticator app.
The change is effective on March 5th.
According to the email notifying Name.com customers of this change:
Name.com is changing its Two-Step Verification service on March 5, 2015. On that date Verisign credentials will be shut down, and we’ll exclusively use Google Authenticator for Two-Step Verification.
You can continue using your Verisign credentials until then, but if you do not add Google Authenticator credentials to your account by March 5 you will no longer have Two-Step Verification. Google credentials can be added at any time.
The Google Authenticator app is a free download, and is available on iOS, Android, and Blackberry devices.
To be honest, we liked the Verisign VIP Access app, that also had a desktop version. The Google Authenticator is for mobile devices only.
Two-factor authentication is a must, in a time and era that domain theft is rampant; currently, Uniregistry also uses the Google Authenticator for its two-factor authentication implementation.
How stupid decision to drop something that works well for years. If they offer another option, it would be smart enough, but to discontinue working product and push satisfied customers to new platform? C’mon!
On the other hand, NAME.COM is unable to offer registry lock service (.COM) for years, even customers demand such service.
What a shame.
Marek – Not sure why that decision was made, but I preferred the Verisign VIP solution as it also offered a desktop version.
DomainGang – I use and like the VeriSign VIP as well. I wish there would be less influence of eNOM in NAME.COM registrar services. It is also strange to see just 30 day notice of service discontinuing.
Marek – It doesn’t take a lot to change over, however. Download the Google Auth app, add a key and you’re done.
Just the opposite of the things said here, I always had problems with Verisign VIP so i am happy with this decision.
Fatih – How can you have problems with an app that works in thousands of accounts? All you do is copy the code and paste it.
