We’ve always said it’s a domain zoo out there. The domain DomainZoo.com is a domain registrar and its operators, DomainZoo.com, Inc., have applied for the registration of the matching mark, DOMAINZOO.COM with the USPTO.
The application cites May 10, 2000, as the date of first use of the mark in interstate commerce. The mark was apparently registered in 2002 but it was not renewed, leading to its eventual cancellation.
The mark is applied for “Domain name registration services.”
Why was DOMAINZOO.COM applied for as a trademark at the USPTO?
Itβs an ongoing trend among owners of generic domain names, following the decision by SCOTUS on the Booking.com trademark application.
Since then, dozens of generic domain names have been applied to be registered as trademarks, inclusive of the TLD.
As of January 5th, 2021, BOOKING.COM is a registered trademark with the USPTO.
Will these applications become the new norm? Watch this video from NamesCon Online 2020.
