The operators of Overstock.com, the online retail company that still uses O.co as its shortcut, have filed several trademark applications for OVERSTOCK.COM.
Filed with an “intent to use” clause, the text mark applications cover the following products and services:
- Financial services, featuring, electronic transfer of crypto assets and digital tokens
- On-line non downloadable virtual goods and Non-Fungible Tokens
- Downloadable virtual goods, namely, computer programs featuring home, bath, and body products, jewelry, electronics, cookware, housewares, appliances, furniture, linens, pillows, decorative accessories, office furniture and accessories, toys, games, sporting goods, tools, outdoor lawn and garden equipment, pet supplies and paper products for use in online virtual worlds
- Retail store services featuring virtual goods, namely, home, bath, and body products, jewelry, electronics, cookware, housewares, appliances, furniture, linens, pillows, decorative accessories, office furniture and accessories, toys, games, sporting goods, tools, outdoor lawn and garden equipment, pet supplies and paper products; and entertainment services featuring virtual goods, for use in online virtual worlds
From these trademark registration applications, it’s evident that Overstock is moving into the crypto and NFT space fast, supplementing its real, tangible products with non-tangible, digital ones.
Why was the domain name OVERSTOCK.COM applied for as a trademark with the USPTO?
It’s an ongoing trend among owners of generic domain names, following the decision by SCOTUS on the Booking.com trademark application.
Since then, dozens of generic domain names have been applied to be registered as trademarks, inclusive of the TLD.
As of January 5th, 2021, BOOKING.COM is a registered trademark with the USPTO.
