It’s a cut-throat industry and we’re not talking about porn either.
It’s about the Registrar business.
There is competition and small profits; the Registries keep a nice chunk of it and ICANN grabs a quarter for making it all work. The rest goes into the Registrar’s piggy-bank but how can they survive the competition?
Simply put, Registrars offer incentives.
Sometimes, they drop the registration price by taking a loss – hopefully attracting thousands of customers who will get a bill with a nice price increase the following year.
Robert Jaffrit and his wife Patty run a mom-and-pop Registrar out of Mobile, Alabama called “Farmville Domainers” and they just came up with a novel idea about how to increase their customer base.
“Well, we talked it over with Patty and we reckoned it’d be fun to offer our customers some home-cooked meals for the rest of the summer”, says Robert picking his teeth with a metal pick. “Patty makes some great eggs with bacon and gravy, the customer gets as much coffee and biscuits as they want, day in day out until September 22. Yep! Register a domain and get your breakfast goodness!”
This novel idea for attracting new customers, particularly locals, was not met with much enthusiasm by everyone. Gary Fletcher IV – also from Mobile, Alabama – runs a small ISP that acts as a reseller for eNom and he’s not exactly pleased.
“Them guys are gonna run me off my business, what’s so good about giving your customers breakfast when you can’t pay the bills? No sir, I ain’t gonna be offering a damn cup of coffee, rest assured!”, says Gary, clearly upset.
It’s yet another attempt by domain entrepreneurs and businesses to hit back at the current state of our bad economy – something that President Obama has promised to take care of, while his wife Michelle met with the Spanish King during her week-long vacation in Barcelona.
Make mine are over easy please 😀
TPZ – Over easy? Yuck. You’d have to call Farmville Domainers and let them know.
