Windows 10 will be free for all current users of Windows 7 and Windows 8.x according to an announcement by Microsoft today.
That’s right: users of the two most recent versions of the Microsoft Windows operating system will upgrade to Windows 10 for free – as long as they do so within a year of the new version’s release.
Windows 10 is expected to be a major step up from current versions, adding several desktop management tools, a voice activated assistant called Cortana and even Spartan – a new web browser; the good old Start button and functionality also returns, with a hybrid version that adds tiles.
The free upgrade method will allow Microsoft to control the version fragmentation among its users, that still prefer to use the dated but popular Windows 7 over its latest Windows 8.1 variant.
