The US Marines, known for their fierce battling of all enemies are having some serious trouble with the biggest enemy of the state: bureaucrats.
“Our motto, Semper Fi, is an important statement that is linked to the pride and efficiency of the US Marine Corps, said Sergeant Major Ted McTardy of the US Marines.
“The US Marines are striving to be the very best – always faithful, is what we stand for”.
The IT department of the US Marines approached the owners of Semper.fi – the ccTLD being that of Finland.
“We thought it’d make perfect sense to own that domain, it’s the absolute shortest URL to have. My boys at the IT department call it a “hack”. I don’t give a damn what it’s called, we will be getting it or we’ll send in a marine platoon to take over Finland!”, said Sergeant Major Ted McTardy.
Meanwhile, the Finnish company that owns Semper.fi is sending taunting messages to the US Marines, reminding them of how the Finnish military butchered the Soviet army that invaded Finland in 1939.
Nowadays it’s not just corporations that fight for domain space, it seems that the involvement of the military will add further controversy to the online war of domains.

I think the nuclear option should seriously be considered in this case.
Jeff – Small nuclear arms designed to only take out a domain registry. I think your idea has a potential market. Brilliant! 😀
Even if this would be true, US marines could not register the domain since .fi domains are under the juristiction of the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (Ficora) and the Finnish Domain-law. Which states that a finnish domain name has to be owned by a person living or a company registered in Finland. Even if the US Navy could accuire the domain, they could not keep it since it would be unregistered by Ficora on breach of the Finnish Domain Law.
Actually, as we speak, there are US Marines training urban war fare in Finland. Coincidence….? 😉 By the way, Soviet Union never invaded Finland and Helsinki was never occupied by the ruskies. After the war a British minister asked a finnish general “How many russian troops do you have in Finland?” The finnish general Ehrnrooth replied “Well over 100 000. Six feet deep, buried along the border”
John & Patrik – We are on the side of the Finnish on this. It’s a fight without merit, but try telling that to a jarhead.
