Fake University : Indian students upset over UNNJ.edu snafu

Directnic

The creation of an entire “fake university” with a campus, a president, curriculum and even a clothing line was a cunning plan orchestrated by the Department of Homeland Security.

The University of Northern New Jersey operated from UNNJ.edu, a highly coveted TLD restricted only to educational institutions.

Indian students are now calling this sting operation unfair towards those who took the fall: foreign students, mostly from India and China, alongside the University’s recruiters.

Some are asking Sushma Swaraj, Minister of External Affairs of India, to take a look into this matter, via Twitter:

@SushmaSwaraj I urge you to look into this matter! Why should every student take the fall here ?

@SushmaSwaraj , @narendramodi Pls help #Indians stranded due 2 fake #UNNJ sting operation.

@SushmaSwaraj we request your involvement to save our innocent students. #unnj

It is not clear yet whether every enrolled student in UNNJ was aware of the fake university’s status.

Several companies and social media profiles were apparently created in an effort to create a more convincing environment for the sting operation.

For now, one can buy a real Fake.University for $4,500 dollars, and no extras. Or watch this video below.

    Do we know if the DHS was targeting any particular activity?
    If they were “just” students why were they detained?

  2. DomainGang says:

    Amanda – It seems there are a variety of incidents, per the attorney video. Some students most definitely knew, others simply used the recruiters accused in this case, others moved on transferring to other universities. DHS was targeting the use of the University system to overstay one’s visa by obtaining student status unlawfully. In the process, DHS created their own university, complete with a .EDU domain.
