Adam Dicker - Owner of popular domain forum, DNForum.com
It’s one of these moments that make seasoned domainers shake their heads in amazement.
We’ve all made mistakes: registered domains that approximate or match trademarks. But to try and sell one such blatant violation to the trademark owner, that really requires some balls.
DNForum owner, Adam Dicker, has established use of the mark through several years of active provision of an online forum to talk about domains.
DNForum.com – with its byline “The Place to Talk Domains” – has been used consistently since Adam bought the domain name and its community in 2003.
It appears that some foolish domain newbie attempted to sell DNForum.cm – an obvious typo – to Adam Dicker, alleging that the typo domain is owned by “a friend” and that its traffic is consistently high.
Not only is the domain a trademark violation, but the attempted sale utilizes faked traffic reports; the domain, currently parked at Sedo shows only 14 visitors in the past 31 days.
Regardless, Adam Dicker’s trademark application includes the following clause:
Hosting an online website featuring a discussion regarding domain names; Providing a web site featuring technology that enables users to buy, sell, learn about, get appraisals, and discuss domain names
The trademark application at the USPTO uses 12/23/2001 as the date of “first use” – that’s the date the domain was registered; the forum went live in early 2002.
Adam started a thread exposing the entire extortion attempt and thus far there is little indication that any such attempt will succeed. Adam Dicker is a seasoned domainer and as the owner of DNForum he utilizes humor to describe this futile extortion attempt. 😉
