A 5.8 earthquake has hit the Virginia area, home of Verisign that commands two of the world’s 13 root nameservers.
“There has been no noticeable disruption of the Internet”, said Nick Fadamidis – a spokesperson for Verisign.
“Ever wonder where your money goes when you renew those domain names? Now you know, it goes to anti-quake infrastructure to help keep the Internet on its feet.”
The earthquake was felt as far north as Toronto and New York.
According to Verisign they might have to reboot the Internet later this afternoon, so don’t get upset if your twitter, facebook and eBay sessions time out.
“At Verisign we take the Internet uptime very seriously”, added Nick Fadamidis. “We offer a service unlike any other to the American and international Internet users, something that it’s often less appreciated than deserved.”
Earthquakes along with other natural disasters such as volcanic eruptions, often disrupt the flow of data on the Information Superhighway that Al Gore allegedly invented in the early 1990’s.
