The much-advertised auction for the new gTLD dot .APP is apparently back in limbo; in a shocking statement, Google retracts its bid of $25 million dollars as an ‘unfortunate error.’
“We are pulling out of that auction, good luck to the 2nd bidder, it was an honest mistake,” said Mark Gabinski, VP of gTLD infrastructure & domain bidding for Google.
“Just like in the Cowboys.com case, we honestly believed the actual price was $250,000 which would make more sense, really,” added Gabinski.
Google’s retraction of the apparently erroneous bid can be attributed to a poor fourth quarter in 2014; just over $12 million dollars of revenue from Google web sites.
“Many of our Android app fans will be disappointed, thinking that we beat Apple and its store plans by winning dot .APP, but we don’t have that much cash in hand to blow on gTLDs,” said Mark Gabinski.
The dot .APP gTLD is now back in auction; needless to say, ICANN will not be too pleased over this.
