According to Wikipedia:
Don’t ask, don’t tell (DADT) is the common term for the policy restricting the United States military from efforts to discover or reveal closeted gay, lesbian, and bisexual service members or applicants, while barring those who are openly gay, lesbian, or bisexual from military service.
Obviously, the military operates under strict procedures that often times appear to be against the various forms of freedom provided for by the US Constitution.
The “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was introduced as a compromise measure in 1993 by then-President Bill Clinton who campaigned on the promise to allow all citizens to serve in the military regardless of sexual orientation.
In January 2010, the White House and congressional officials started work on repealing the ban by inserting language into the 2011 defense authorization bill.
