#GuardDuty : Dot .com #domain buyer already built “generic” web site

The current registrant of GuardDuty.com acquired the domain via Sedo, the day Amazon announced its Guard Duty AWS service.

At that time, we speculated that the buyer could have been Amazon, that has registered AmazonGuardDuty.com.

Later on, the domain was moved to Uniregistry and that meant the buyer is most likely a domain speculator.

Indeed, our hunch was proven right, as GuardDuty.com now displays content related to the generic meaning of the words “Guard duty.”

That guy is fast! 😀

guard duty

It’s a risky acquisition, due to the timing of the events.

Regardless, as GuardDuty.com is being used in such an accurate manner, the apparent “cheesy” factor might prove to be beneficial for its owner: perhaps Amazon will spend big bucks to buy the domain.

By our guesstimate, GuardDuty.com was sold for less than $2,000 dollars at Sedo.

I think at that price it’s a worthwhile gamble that just might pay off. The only problem is that with branding and portals literally taking over the Internet, the new GD landing spot will like be at something like “www.amazon.com/guardduty/” instead and Amazon just bought the other domain for brand protection (and not actual use) like they always do. I guess time will tell.
