Domain investor Adam Dicker is a popular speaker at various domain conferences, with an upcoming book on domain investing.
For all that, he was apparently targeted by a scammer on Skype, who posed as a top US military soliciting Adam Dicker’s advice and support.
Impersonating the real Sgt. Major Lebert Beharie, the scammer sent the message:
“Hi Friend how are you doing today with your beloved family? Am Sgt. Maj. Lebart Beharie. I hope to hear soon from you for introduction OKay.”
After sharing contact details with this person, Adam Dicker was subsequently contacted:
“hello Mr Adam / how are you today? / Am good too, Am Sgt. Maj. Lebert Beharie from United State [sic] but am here in Afghanistan and you?”
The scammer proceeded with an offer, upon which Adam Dicker realized what was going on:
“I have a business deal for you”
Moral of the story: don’t allow random people on your contact list and double-check contact information.
The scammer appears to have skimmed the real contact info of Sgt. Major Lebert Beharie from their Facebook profile.
I get these all the time on yahoo and skype, they all have a family member that is sick and need money, or they have money in another country and just need our bank account number here in the us, so they can transfer the money and if we send it to there family, they will make it worth our while.
Anytime you start a conversation on skype or yahoo, be very vague, 9 out of 10 times in a short while the conversation leads to them wanting money.
