The new gTLD program appears to be a common reality these days, but in the months before the final approval of hundreds of gTLD strings, dot .XXX led the pack.

Stuart Lawley, Chairman and President of the ICM Registry LLC, celebrates 12 years as a domain industry innovator with the company.

A little bit of background story:

“ICM Registry, LLC, first proposed the .xxx top-level domain name (TLD) to the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) in 2000 and reapplied for the domain in 2004 in response to ICANN’s request for proposals for new “sponsored” TLDs.

While various advocacy groups opposed those proposals and ICANN initially rejected the idea of a .xxx TLD, the application was finally approved in March 2011 as a sponsored TLD intended for use by members of the “online adult entertainment industry”.”

Four years ago, dot .XXX entered general availability, preceding the arrival of the numerous gTLDs we are still getting accustomed with today.

Most recently, under Stuart Lawley’s leadership, two more adult gTLDs were launched: dot .Adult and dot .Porn – a third and big one, dot .Sex, is expected to arrive in September.

A video from the time of the launch of dot .XXX can be watched below.
